Study No. 1 PATHWAY TO MATURITY SERIES
Exodus 20:1 - 17.
This series is an exposition and an application of the Ten
Commandments to the Christian's walk, that they form a complete
pattern for life is suggested by the fact that they were presented to
a people who were:
1. Ignorant of the ways and nature of God. Deut. 9:3-4; 32:28.
2. In a spiritual vacuum and physical bondage. Ex. 4:30-31; 6:1-9.
3. Bound be resentful desires for ease and self-indulgence. Deut.
31:27; 32:20.
A. The Law Is Fulfilled In Christ - Romans 8:3-4
The life potential within the law was not realised because of the
sinful nature of man, God therefore had to introduce man to grace.
Gal. 3:21-28.
Today the law can be more of an instrument for righteousness than
a barrier to it. Deut. 30:1-6. God has dealt with man's heart.
Heb. 10:16; 8:10.
B. The Law Is A Pathway Not A Wall Psalm 119:32-36
Psalm 19:7-10 - The law is not a wall barring entrance to God's
Kingdom, but a pathway ordered and thought out. It becomes a
means both of deliverance and of self-fulfillment to those willing
to mix faith with it. Heb. 4:2.
C. The Giving Of The Law Exodus 19:20
The law was given to reveal sin. Rom. 7:7.
The spirit came to reveal the Saviour and give dominion over sin.
Rom. 8:4.
Moses told the people "The words which the Lord commanded".
Ex.19:7.
Look at the following order:-
1. The Solemn Promise
The people answered, "All that the Lord hath promised, we will
do" Ex. 19:8
2. The Needful Preparation
"Be ye ready for the Lord will come, whosoever toucheth the
Mount shall be surely put to death" Ex. 19:11-12
3. The Aweful Presence
"The Lord came down" Ex. 19:16-20
4. The Effect Produced
a. The people were petrified (realised their sinfulness).
"They removed and stood afar off" Ex. 20:18
b. The people desired a mediator.
"They said unto Moses, speak thou with us, and let not God
speak with us lest we die" Ex. 20:19
D. The Way Of The Law
Romans 13:8-9 A summary of the law.
Obedience and faith must be founded upon a relationship with God.
1 John 2:3,5.
The first four Commandments are concerned with spiritual
development.
1. Love for God.
God is the source of life. God alone, therefore, must be the
initiator, the means and end. The purpose of all we do. Rom.
11:36.
2. Belonging to God.
Idols have nothing and take everything, people build idols to
bolster their weak faith. Idolatry is the will of the flesh.
Psalm 115:4-8, Col. 3:5.
3. Faith in God.
Those who see little significance in the Lord's name will use
it carelessly. James 1:6-8.
4. Waiting on God.
The principle of rest is the standard of our trust in God.
(Work is not the most important thing.)
These first four laws establish principles which enable free God-
man relationship.
The next five establish principles that bring man into self-
discipline and enable growth in his relationship with man.
First we relate to God, then we relate to man. Matt. 22:37-40.
5. Development of character.
The family is God's chosen means of developing each individual
life. Eph. 6:1-13.
6. Emotional control. (Development of personality)
This law speaks of co-living. Murder is the excessive
expression of self-will. Matt. 5:21-22.
7. Physical control. (Faithfulness)
Adultery is not only a matter of lust, but is also of betrayal
and escapism. It speaks of shallowness and hardness of heart.
Prov. 7:7-27.
8. Productivity and Self-control.
The thief is one to whom the rights of others are unimportant,
he is self-indulgent and emotionally barren. We must know the
value of people. Luke 6:38.
9. Humility and Self-control.
Promotion comes from God. To demote others by tale-bearing is
to promote self. The human heart can be corrupted by ambition.
Rom.12:10.
The final Commandment provides opportunity for a progressive and
deepening experience and trust in God.
E. The Law Is A Sequence. Psalm 119:32-36
Growth in the spirit is step by step. Isaiah 28:10. Each law
provides a challenge of faith for which the believer is prepared.
1. All growth is established upon a firm basis of experience.
2. There is order in the progress of growth.
3. When breakdown occurs, there is an easy method of diagnosis,
God's Word. Psalm 139:23, Heb. 4:12-13.
4. Failure at any level blocks progress. When this happens, we
need to retrace our steps and then come back again to the
challenge of faith and obedience.
5. The agent for growth is the Holy Spirit. John 16:13.
Note the sequence in Psalm 119:33-37.
vs 33 "Teach me" - point out
- indicate to me
vs 34 "Give me understanding" - make me discern
- give me insight
vs 35 "Make me go" - guide my feet
Act of walking in the divine way.
vs 36 "Incline my heart" - bend my heart
- make me understand and do thy will
vs 37 "Turn away my eyes" - stop me from looking at sin
- lead me not into temptation
F. The Law - The Foundation. Matthew 22:37-40
1. The First Commandment.
Ex. 20:3 - "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"
Key thought - love for God.
God's standard. Romans 11:36.
"For of Him, through Him, and unto Him are all things, to whom
be glory forever."
a. ARE ALL THINGS OF GOD?
When the love of God becomes our prime motivation, all
motives are open to Him, we become:-
teachable, approachable, tenderhearted.
1 Cor. 2:9. "Eye hath not seen and ear has not heard, and
neither has it entered the heart of man all that God has
prepared for them that love Him."
b. ARE ALL THINGS THROUGH GOD?
When God satisfies our hearts, we see God's work and cease
to strive.
"God works in you both to will and do His good pleasure."
Phil.2:13.
We become: - submitted
- dependent
- channels of God's power
Note Luke 7:6-9.
"I am not fit for you to come under my roof...say thy word
and my servant will be healed...Jesus marvelled and said, I
have not found so great faith, not even in Israel."
The centurion saw, believed and became small in his own
sight, he entered the faith realm.
c. ARE ALL THINGS UNTO HIM?
Do we live for the ultimate purpose of anything other than
God?
When we submit to divine strength and methods, we begin to
confine our faculties to their God-appointed tasks. This is
God's answer to rebellion, the result of this new efficiency
and rest is that we become: - stable
- orderly
- authoritative
- channels of God's glory
Eph. 3:19-20.
"That you may be filled with all the fullness of God, now
unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond
all we ask or think, according to the power that works in
us, to Him be glory in the church."
